Nursing tutors play a crucial role in shaping students’ professional growth and career trajectories. They provide academic guidance, mentorship, and clinical supervision, ensuring that students develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills (Brown et al., 2024). Effective nursing tutors inspire students, instill confidence, and help them navigate career choices in various nursing specialties, such as pediatric nursing, critical care, and public health (Williams & Johnson, 2023).
At Abia State University Teaching Hospital, nursing tutors are responsible for both classroom instruction and clinical training. However, there is limited research on how their mentorship influences students’ career decisions and professional development. Some studies suggest that students who receive strong mentorship from tutors are more likely to pursue specialized nursing careers and exhibit higher levels of confidence in their practice (Taylor et al., 2023).
Despite their important role, nursing tutors face challenges such as workload pressures, limited resources, and varying student engagement levels. This study aims to evaluate the impact of nursing tutors on students’ career development at Abia State University Teaching Hospital and identify ways to enhance mentorship in nursing education.
The transition from nursing education to professional practice requires not only technical skills but also career guidance and mentorship. Many nursing students struggle with career decisions due to limited exposure to professional pathways and insufficient support from educators (Gonzalez & Mackey, 2024). Effective tutoring can help students make informed career choices, develop critical thinking skills, and build confidence in their abilities (Smith et al., 2023).
At Abia State University Teaching Hospital, nursing tutors are integral to students' academic and professional development. However, there is a need to evaluate how effectively tutors support career development and what challenges they face in guiding students toward fulfilling careers.
This study focuses on nursing students and tutors at Abia State University Teaching Hospital. It does not extend to other healthcare educators. Limitations may include variations in students’ career interests and differences in mentorship styles among tutors.
